BREAKING NEWS:General Hospital Ilorin records another COVID-19 case suspected case escapes

There was panic and pandemonium at the General Hospital Ilorin today (Monday) when a suspected case of COVID-19 was brought to the hospital. The middle-aged male patient came to the hospital with symptoms suggestive of COVID-19. He was thereafter admitted to the temporary holding area in the Accident and Emergency section of the hospital.

However, immediately the suspicion of COVID-19 was entertained, it generated panic in the hospital. Doctors, nurses and other health workers ran away from the Emergency room.

The critically-ill patients on admission took a cue from the health workers, and took to their heels for safety. This led to a state of pandemonium in the entire hospital amongst staff, patients and their caregivers.

The State Rapid Response team was invited, however the suspected case escaped from the hospital before their arrival. A senior health worker in the hospital who spoke to Moonlight News on condition of anonymity said the hospital is ill-prepared for cases of COVID-19.

According to the source, there is insufficient Personal Protective Equipment (PPEs), and non-availability of PPEs as and when needed by staff.
Members of staff, the source alleged, do not feel protected and confident enough to treat  suspected COVIID-19 cases. Effort to reach the hospital management proved abortive. Special Adviser on Health matters  and Commissioner for Health could also not be reached as at the time of going to press.

It would be recalled that a few days ago, a similar pandemonium and state of panic occurred in the hospital when a pregnant woman with COVID-19 was treated at the hospital which resulted in  a female doctor in the Obstetrics and Gynaecology department of the hospital contracting the disease.

The whole Maternity unit of the hospital was shut down as doctors and nurses in the unit were sent on self-isolation.

The pertinent questions being asked by observers are firsly, being the apex hospital owned by the Kwara State Government (KWSG) is the hospital management prepared for COVID-19 patients?

Secondly, what is the competence of the Hospital management, the Hospital Management Bureau, the State Ministry of Health, and the Kwara COVID-19 Technical committee in safeguarding the health of Kwarans especially against COVID-19 in the face of continued  rising cases of the disease in the state?

Thirdly, what has happened to the billions of naira so far expended on COVID-19 by KWSG if General Hospital Ilorin is not prepared for suspected cases?

There is, therefore, an urgent need to account for the donations in cash and kind by individuals and corporate organisations to the KWSG towards the COVID-19 pandemic in Kwara State.
