COVID-19: Marketers defied government order in Ilorin.

Traders of perishable commodities in Ilorin metropolis on Wednesday defied kwara state government orders on complete lock-down of the state.

The state government had late Tuesday issued a press statement on modifications of its earlier restriction order saying, among others that "it has ban Monday, Wednesday and Friday market between the hours of 10am and 2pm.

However, on Wednesday when our reporters visited Sango, Mandate and Oja-tuntun markets in Ilorin at about 3:15 pm, market women were still attending to their customers in full scale while most of the major roads in the state capital were busy with both commercial and private motorists having a field day not minding the new government restriction orders.

In Oja-oba market at about 3:30 pm normal commercial activities were on as traders displayed their goods on the road side there by blocking vehicular and pedestrian movement at Idi-ape.

At about few minutes to 4:00 pm, the situation was similar at Yoruba road, GRA market in Ilorin south local government as marketers were also busy with selling and buying at full brim.

At the Mandate market in Adewole, a trader,  Alhaja Raliat Abdullahi who spoke with our reporter lamented that they were compelled to go to the market as a result of hardship being experienced for staying at home, stressing that hunger is killing them.

She bemoaned that palliatives programme of the state government was not sufficient to care for an husband and wife let alone large family of four or six.
"Though the state government is indefinitely doing its best, it does not have enough to adequately go round every one", she lamented.

One of the customers in the market, Mrs. Magret Johnson appealed to kwarans to be law abiding  and adhere to government orders, also calling on the government to provide enabling environment for health workers for effectiveness of their duty.

All efforts to speak with the chairman of the market proved abortive as he was said to have been in a crucial meeting.
