Offa Banks Robbery: I'm not aware of suspects' arraignment – Kwara Attorney General

By Opeyemi Daniel; Olayiwola Temitope

Following the recent arraignment of 5 suspects connected with Offa Banks robbery that claimed 33 lives including 9 police officers in Offa, Offa Local Government Area of Kwara State, the state Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, KamaldeenAjibade (SAN) has denied having prior knowledge of the arraignment and therefore disassociate the ministry from the development.
In a press release, Ajibade noted that thirteen (13) suspects were arrested in relation to the crime faulting the reason why only five (5) of them were brought to court

The AG maintained that the suspects cannot be tried without the case diary, pointing out that the state government is never aware of the arraignment.
"I don't have any position on the matter until I see the file, we're not the one that arraigned them, if I'm to arraign them, I can't take them to magistrate court because it lacks jurisdiction to try the matter.

"It is the police who took them there and I was not contacted before that was done, I'm not officially informed, they've not even told me they've brought them to Kwara State because I've not seen the file. I'm not aware of the arraignment, that is my position and it has not changed" Ajibade said.

Recall that last week Tuesday five of the suspects were arraigned before an Ilorin Magistrate Court; a day after Ajibade accused the police of deliberate falsehood on claims that the trial of the suspects was being delayed by the state.
The names of the 5 suspects are; AyoadeAkinnibosun, IbikunleOgunleye, Adeola Abraham, SalaudeenAzeez and NiyiOgundiran.

It was gathered that the number of suspects arraigned at magistrate court in Ilorin was contrary to the number paraded at the police headquarters in Abuja.
Also, Michael Adikwu the dismissed police constable who had once confessed to be the mastermind of the bloody operation was not in court during the arraignment and many others.

The suspects were brought before Magistrate Bio Saliu on the offences of criminal conspiracy and armed robbery, contrary to section 6 (b) of the Armed robbery and firearms (Special Provision) Act Cap R11 LFN 2004 and culpable homicide punishable with death contrary to section 221 of Penal Code.
