Promote real research, not book review, Gov Ahmed charges VCs

The executive governor of Kwara State, Alhaji Abdulfatah Ahmed, has charged professors and Vice Chancellors in the country to promote real research in their various universities as against book review that is common among them.

He made this known through the Hon. Commissioner for Tertiary Education, Science and Technology, Dr Aminat Ahmed at the 32nd edition of the Conference of Association of Vice Chancellors of Nigerian Universities (AVCNU) tagged, 21st century University Education in Nigeria: Prospects and Challenges going on at the Kwara State University KWASU, Malete.

Gov Ahmed expressed that “KWASU is less than a decade old, and as you would have discovered, it is not doing badly at all. This is courtesy of the government’s commitment and more importantly, the quality of the leadership of the university.

“I am happy to say that Professor AbdulRasheed Na’Allah, working with dedicated members of his management team and indeed the entire staff and students, the course of the university has been advanced in the quality of teaching and learning aided by good physical structure.

“This university has attained first position in many spheres of academic endeavor. At least, it is only in KWASU that we have Aeronautic engineering courses accredited by the National University Commission (NUC)” he said.

Gov Ahmed however drew the attention of the universities to today’s need in terms of economic development that can guarantee job creation and self-independence.

“I charge you all to ensure that our universities promote real research instead of the book review that is prevalent over the years. It is only through pragmatic approach, that we can guarantee sustainable growth in our country.

“Unless and until we graduate students as job creators, our over saturated market of unemployable youths can at best remain time bombs that would do us no good. As you meet here today, I hope you will come out with professional ideas that will make our future worthwhile” the governor charged.

Speaking earlier, the Vice Chancellor of the University for Community Development, Professor AbdulRasheed Na,Allah in his welcome address, also charged his counterparts to be proactive in their chosen career, saying, professors should not be too big to lecture, adding  that in a situation whereby all hands are on deck, we would have colleges of research and not words alone.

Speaking on the incessant strike of Nigerian Universities, Na’Allah said, university closure, can never be a solution to the nation, stressing that the association must collaborate with the government and stop the perpetual closure of our universities, adding that “we must take our universities to the true height they belong”

In his own address, the chairman of the association, profession Z Adebowale, confesses that there are myriads of issues confronting tertiary institutions in this country, the best group of people equipped to discuss this, is the Vice Chancellors of our ivory towers and the AVCNU Conference has become an excellent avenue for discussing and proffering solutions to challenges in the education sector as well as other issues confronting the nation.

Speaking further, the chairman saluted the endurance, courage, tenacity and audacity of our able Chancellors saying, “It actually takes resourceful and rugged vice chancellors to come up with solution to the numerous social, academic, financial, municipal and infrastructural challenges in our universities” he added.

The five day programme which started on Sunday is expected to end on Friday.
